Ep. 12: The Joy Of Midlife Evolution with Jennifer Newbill

by | Nov 17, 2023

Jennifer Newbill has been on an amazing healing journey

I met Jen at a recruiting conference around seven years ago, and if you’d told me then that we would have had this conversation, I wouldn’t have believed you. She has dropped the masks and addressed factors that were quite literally making her ill, curing illnesses that baffle doctors and scientists.

In our interview, we talked about:

  • Jen’s trauma and using DNRS to heal
  • Being curious about pain and illness instead of being judgemental
  • Finding stillness through yoga and our love for singing bowls
  • That we can heal ourselves

Jennifer Newbill welcome to Beyond The Damage of Words podcast I’m so thrilled to talk to you because we met at like some random recruitment conference about oh six years ago and I’ll never forget because we did our disc profiles and you were so red and then I see yoga.

00:03.75
Jennifer Newbill
Thank You. Oh.

00:17.10
katrinamcollier
And soundbaths and singing bowls and I’m like I need to talk to you? What’s been going on. How do we go from a red disk to this.

00:19.65
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah, yes, fighting the red.

00:28.53
katrinamcollier
Ah, yeah I think the red was a mask but.

00:32.70
Jennifer Newbill
It could have been for sure I think we all build these masks. Um in our childhood because they’re defense mechanisms to kind of manage what’s happening at home or at school or what have you? so.

00:40.70
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, so.

00:44.82
katrinamcollier
Oh.

00:47.23
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah I think I’m a little softer inside than maybe I thought I was but yeah, yeah, oh thank you.

00:51.55
katrinamcollier
But you’ve been on a bit of a healing journey. What’s happened though I mean this is quite a change isn’t it from ah by the way congratulations on 20 years at dell for anybody who thinks that people don’t stay a long time at companies anymore. Amazing.

01:05.20
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah, exactly my 20 year anniversaries tomorrow and I can’t believe my transformation has been over this period of time really is the last twenty years um so yeah, we were talking a little bit about this before but I about.

01:12.16
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s extraordinary. Um.

01:23.78
Jennifer Newbill
Four or five years ago I started to experience a lot of physical symptoms and I think this is really important for people to hear because when we talk about mind and body. We all, we all know they’re all the same. But what does that really look like in our day to day so lack of sleep.

01:27.12
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

01:36.90
katrinamcollier
And.

01:41.65
Jennifer Newbill
Problems either falling asleep staying asleep and then being wired but tired right? True true exhaustion to the bones. Um, kind of like heart palpitations brain fog. Um you know I’m just trying to think lots of GI.

01:45.10
katrinamcollier
Yeah, the worst one.

02:01.42
Jennifer Newbill
Like let’s just be honest, like the the trauma sits in the gut which I thought was very interesting I thought I can’t eat gluten I tried every restrictive diet you can imagine which just made me more anxious. Ah, right at the the wellness industry. Yes.

02:02.22
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah.

02:13.84
katrinamcollier
Yeah to keep pushing keeping it’s funny I Just oh sorry I don’t mean to interrupt you I just wrote about this because I’m writing the book in a very strange order.

02:20.60
Jennifer Newbill
Exactly exactly I think the wellness industry.

02:30.50
katrinamcollier
And I’m just writing about strange my chiropractic because mine came out from kinesiology and actually it’s really fascinating like what you’re saying. So if you suppress anger you end up with heart Disease which is what my dad ended up with and then what you’re talking about suppressing the trauma and whatever energy into your gut mine into like structurally.

02:30.72
Jennifer Newbill
Um.

02:35.64
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah.

02:48.65
katrinamcollier
Fascinating isn’t it can’t deny it. Um, yeah.

02:49.40
Jennifer Newbill
Yep, it’s absolutely fascinating our body talks to us and of course the body keeps the score which is a very popular book and I’m glad that it’s popular because people are really unpacking and unfolding. Why they’re may be experiencing certain thoughts or feelings or physical symptoms. What is maybe the root of that as opposed to I’m sick I need to go to the doctor this is wrong with me I went to three I went to 3 different sleep doctors and.

03:03.00
katrinamcollier
Um.

03:05.74
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, exactly yeah here’s a tablet. Yeah wow.

03:20.60
Jennifer Newbill
Really, there’s nothing wrong with my sleep per se it was my ability to calm my nervous system and calm my mind in order to fall asleep and slightly I am happy to say, especially the last two weeks I’ve slept very very well I mean it’s been like.

03:25.67
katrinamcollier
Um.

03:39.60
katrinamcollier
Which is amazing because we’ve had a super moon. Ah.

03:39.44
Jennifer Newbill
I’ve been like out. But oh we’ve had a super moon and it’s been extremely hot in Texas it’s been one of the hottest I slept through a super moon I did but I practiced yoga under the super moon and had a soundbath that night before I went to bed. So.

03:46.76
katrinamcollier
Wow, You slept through a super moon I am so impressed. Um.

03:54.80
katrinamcollier
Um, oh oh how? beautiful oh my gosh, the energy Mr Bain incredible ah yeah

03:58.88
Jennifer Newbill
Yes, it was Lovely. There were 60 of us. Yeah, the energy was absolutely phenomenal and I believe in that right that collective consciousness and everybody bringing that energy together. And then afterwards it’s just like a weights then lift it and everybody kind of trickles home and you know does whatever their ritual is and then hopefully sleeps but ah.

04:16.97
katrinamcollier
Home chills.

04:24.95
katrinamcollier
But isn’t it funny that you know people sort of are like oh oh yeah, no I don’t believe any that and it’s like but you go Oh gosh I haven’t heard from Jennifer Newbill for a while and the next second you’re messaging I’m sorry we all have experiences of that all the time but it’s like oh we’re not connected. Ah.

04:31.44
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, absolutely we’re all connected in the world kind of operates in a way that’s not explainable and I do believe that more and more with every passing year. But.

04:40.33
katrinamcollier
Yeah, no, yeah, so what when when you started going like okay I have this problem my digest. What was the first step to healing what did you do that? just went. Okay I’m going to address whatever this thing is that I’m trying to. Ignore by plotting.

04:59.70
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah, so here here’s the um, the cosmos speaking to me so I went through all the kind of different doctors appointments and I won’t bore you or your listeners with those details because I think we’ve all heard it before.

05:05.25
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

05:15.23
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah.

05:16.65
Jennifer Newbill
And it’s just like spending money of some of it’s out of pocket. You know the Us Health Care system is is a little broken and it’s just feeling not listened to or frustrated and even some of the Healthcare care practitioners were like I don’t know what’s going on This is odd. Um so they seem.

05:18.88
katrinamcollier
Course awful.

05:29.34
katrinamcollier
Um, if I wasn’t listened to that would trigger my trauma as well. So that would be wow all that money. Yeah.

05:34.63
Jennifer Newbill
Dumped. Yeah yeah, absolutely and so I it just felt like it was getting worse and worse and worse so I was on my computer um which has spent a lot of time like a lot of people on my computer and I got this newsletter? Yes, exactly.

05:48.55
katrinamcollier
But you do work for doll. But.

05:54.11
Jennifer Newbill
I got this newsletter and in the newsletter there was a mention of something and I’m not promoting this program because there’s different programs like this and I think they’re fantastic. So I’m just gonna throw out my healing path and that’s yes, it’s It’s re it’s.

05:59.84
katrinamcollier
Yeah, absolutely. No talk about your story. That’s fine. Okay, yeah, right,? amazing.

06:12.59
Jennifer Newbill
Ah, neural rewiring right? and so this program was called DNRS which is dynamic neural rewiring system and there’s a woman out of Canada who went through a very similar pattern of physical symptoms emotional symptoms and she created this. Program she did a lot of research. She talked to friends. She talked to experts. That’s the short version and people could just go to Google and type in DNRS and it’s a big commitment because you’re Rewiring your brain so it will include first learning about the limbic system and why do we get.

06:30.97
katrinamcollier
First button.

06:39.75
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah loop. Absolutely.

06:50.90
Jennifer Newbill
Duck and fight flight or freeze because that’s what happens and you have to have to understand and educate yourself and then there’s a series of things that you do every day to rewire your thoughts especially about yourself and your past um.

07:06.34
katrinamcollier
Um, does this resonate does this resonate with you because I’ve always ah explained it as our thought patterns run like a River so they’ll just keep going the same path same path and then to actually get them to change is like getting it over the riverbank and it’s.

07:09.76
Jennifer Newbill
So it’s a lot of visualization. Yep yep.

07:23.73
Jennifer Newbill
Yep, a hundred percent and the metaphor that they use is it’s like a rutted um old dirt road that’s been driven over and rained on and then dried up and driven over and those there’s these really deep ruts.

07:23.81
katrinamcollier
But did you find that was a similar experience.

07:31.85
katrinamcollier
Yes.

07:39.51
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, um.

07:41.16
Jennifer Newbill
So when you’re driving on it. Your wills just kind of naturally go in those ruts so you have to take a completely different road. That’s an old road. It doesn’t it doesn’t work for you anymore. So you have to figure out a different way to get to your destination and sometimes you’re just like I don’t even know.

07:49.11
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, yeah, um.

08:00.24
Jennifer Newbill
I’t have a map. What am I doing so it’s scar. It’s totally scary. You’re like I don’t know what I’m doing I would do these visualizations and Katrina every day I would be on vacation I would look at my husband I would be like I’m going to go and do my visualizations.

08:02.87
katrinamcollier
Um, ah and I don’t know it So it’s a bit scary. It’s like.

08:10.53
katrinamcollier
Yeah, amazing.

08:18.98
Jennifer Newbill
And sometimes that would include meditating before or after listening to certain kind of music and just walking through this visualization process that was taught to me and Dean Or S I felt at first like this is crazy I’m going to be completely on oh I was like this isn’t going to work after about.

08:24.45
katrinamcollier
Ah, how wonderful.

08:33.25
katrinamcollier
Oh you do? Yeah um.

08:38.61
Jennifer Newbill
Two weeks I was like I feel a little better like just enough to be noticeable and it’s but what’s interesting is you know it took me decades to get where I was took probably six to nine months to really feel.

08:43.20
katrinamcollier
Um, two weeks it’s nothing so

08:57.86
Jennifer Newbill
Not like a hundred percent because we what is a hundred percent what does that mean, but to feel like I can operate and feel confident and feel comfortable in my skin again. So it’s a long process. It is lovely though. Yeah, but.

09:09.00
katrinamcollier
Oh that’s lovely. Yeah, but it isn’t it’s like you’ve had 20 years of thinking the same thoughts and been stunk in the same flight fright loop and then you’re making okay whole new roads I actually think six to nine months after 20 years is

09:18.11
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah, yes, yeah, and if you think about it. It’s really more than 20 years because I probably was thinking these thoughts even when I was this middle schooler or you know a teenager.

09:27.65
katrinamcollier
Nothing as well. But it’s. As a child. Yeah, Absolutely oh I Love that? Yeah yeah.

09:37.72
Jennifer Newbill
So yeah, it’s it’s a lifetime. Yeah, it’s a lifetime of armor and I’m thinking this way to protect myself and um I saw a clip from Brene brown that a friend sent me and I can’t quote it because I love her. She’s amazing. But she talked about you get to a point.

09:51.22
katrinamcollier
Um.

09:56.21
Jennifer Newbill
Especially in middle age where the armor it doesn’t fit and it doesn’t suit you anymore and it’s harmful. It’s hurting you and you have to take it off and expose yourself and be vulnerable and it’s scary and it it’s almost hurts in a way like oh I’ve got to take this off. But.

10:01.31
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yes, ah yeah.

10:13.89
Jennifer Newbill
It’s so worth it and now I know what people were talking about around midlife crisis. It’s not a crisis. There’s it’s it’s actually it’s an evolution. Oh Jennifer Newbillks but exactly yes so yes.

10:20.50
katrinamcollier
No, it’s evolution. Yeah Chk Snap I’s like the butterfly coming out of the Crystal Crystalsalis. It’s like you’ve you’ve broken out, you’re like out we come. It is like that I do want to just say something um about.

10:32.81
Jennifer Newbill
Absolutely.

10:38.19
katrinamcollier
You just said a minute ago as well because I write about this in the book Anyone that says that they’re fully healed is lying because we have a wound and we trigger so just watch for that people If you’re looking at any programs snake oil like that you feel.

10:43.22
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah, um.

10:53.69
katrinamcollier
A lot lot better and you understand when you trigger because it’s like my core wound is healed but I have a scar and I trigger and I’ll still trigger and it’s like oh you’re triggering I know I’m triggering because I’m I’m listening. It’s like so that’s that to me is the difference. So it’s amazing.

10:56.83
Jennifer Newbill
Um E yeah.

11:05.29
Jennifer Newbill
Um, absolutely yeah, absolutely knowing what triggers you knowing when you have that response and sometimes it’s physical. So for me, um I’ve been kind of studying the chakras.

11:11.94
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, oh good point. Oh yeah, strength.

11:20.21
Jennifer Newbill
And my yoga training recently. So the solar plexus is the Chakra that’s kind of like just below your diaphragm above your belly button this is where I physically feel it and it feels um the way I described it to that therapist I was seeing at the time. Um, he’s since retired he’s.

11:29.95
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

11:34.67
katrinamcollier
Um, how dare he when they retire is I my chiropractor he will be treating me when he’s 90 and he’s shaking I don’t care. He’s the laterrate i. Ah.

11:37.89
Jennifer Newbill
Lovely and help me make a lot of breakthroughs I Know how dare he retire I know I was like it. Yes I don’t Care. You’re like you’re not allowed to retire how dare you retire on me but he was like Just. Describe it sit and feel it and experience it don’t run away from it and then he’s like describe it to me and I was like it feels like acid. It feels like like toxic and ah and that it’s like a sour feeling and some people feel it in their throat.

11:59.81
katrinamcollier
Yeah, ah.

12:05.94
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, like tar. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

12:16.30
Jennifer Newbill
Right? And we have a chakra at our throat. Um, some people feel it in our heart. Our heart will beat really fast. So I really believe in those energy centers and and your body talking to you and saying there’s something happening and pausing feeling it and then ask being observant and not being judgey and just saying.

12:20.89
katrinamcollier
Oh my god.

12:35.83
Jennifer Newbill
What’s going on right now like what? what do I think is happening. What is this a part of a pattern so I got comfortable sitting with these sensations which don’t feel good and observing I would actually visualize myself. This is a little corny wearing a lab coat.

12:37.88
katrinamcollier
Ah, so.

12:44.17
katrinamcollier
M.

12:51.13
katrinamcollier
Yeah, oh I like it interesting.

12:54.46
Jennifer Newbill
And having a notepad and just saying huh you know? maybe I have glasses on and this visualization maybe not and I’m just saying what is going on here and not judging the feeling or the sensation but just experiencing it and asking myself.

13:05.16
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

13:12.23
Jennifer Newbill
What do I think is happening and that actually makes a huge difference. Um, yes.

13:14.32
katrinamcollier
So I like that. Ah, you’re obviously a very visual person. So I really love that because I’m ah I’m a feeler So I’m like how did you feel how did you create self-compassion but actually by picturing I’m in a lab coat got my glasses on right? I’m just observing and that’s why you had the self-compassion.

13:29.10
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah I’m just I’m in a lata. Yeah I mean yes yeah, and I think.

13:31.91
katrinamcollier
And the kindness because often we’ll go Oh well, you just shouldn’t have a stomach pain or you shouldn’t wear and you have a stomach pain. So what’s it. What’s it about like yeah that kindness yourself is hard. It’s hard to get to that point.

13:45.58
Jennifer Newbill
Also separating the eye from the feeling is really important. So I actually found myself doing this just sometime this week I I had a sensation I can’t remember what it was at the time but you know you have a physical sensation I was like oh this is bothering me.

13:46.92
katrinamcollier
Yes, yes.

13:56.48
katrinamcollier
Um.

14:02.53
Jennifer Newbill
As opposed to I have this sensation or I have this pain. It’s like this isn’t cooperating right now I Wonder what’s happening wonder what’s going on. That’s interesting rather than ah I think it was a headache to be honest and headaches are another very clear symptom of Fight fight or freeze right? I would get.

14:04.44
katrinamcollier
Button. I hear. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

14:21.51
Jennifer Newbill
Mass I wake up with a headache go to bed with a headache I would drink so much water. Nothing would help I would take I was taking excessive amounts of Advil which by the way is not good for your stomach and now it’s like exactly.

14:28.99
katrinamcollier
No oh thinking about all all of that. No wonder you said acid? Oh my God No one you said acid it would have been the anvles. Well interesting.

14:40.72
Jennifer Newbill
Exactly So I would say the head I would say the head is kind of throbbing a little bit right now as opposed to why do I have a headache This is so frustrating I haven’t drank any alcohol I’m hydrated I’m taking great care of myself that’s going to put you deeper into.

14:46.90
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

14:56.84
katrinamcollier
Deep printer it? Yeah yeah.

14:59.54
Jennifer Newbill
Fight flight freeze then just saying the head is hurting. That’s interesting. Yeah.

15:05.80
katrinamcollier
Yeah, fascinating. So how did you get into the yoga then and the sound baths and how’s that helped because that’s still part of your healing journey isn’t it.

15:14.15
Jennifer Newbill
Absolutely I actually have practiced yoga for probably 25 years but I’ve had times where I really have spent a lot of time on the mat and then I’ve had times where I’ve separated myself from the mat and there’s probably a pattern that.

15:19.80
katrinamcollier
Oh okay.

15:28.00
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah.

15:33.74
Jennifer Newbill
You know we could sit and kind of tease it out and figure it out. But um when I So what happened during Covid is I was going to a studio that was it was close proximity to me. It was convenient I didn’t feel a connection. There was one teacher there that I really liked but I didn’t feel an emotional connection.

15:42.65
katrinamcollier
Huh what.

15:52.24
katrinamcollier
Yeah, oh no.

15:52.83
Jennifer Newbill
The studio and to the other people that were there. It didn’t feel like community to me So Covid happened this place unfortunately closed and I was I was kind of going through my recovery actually started before Covid Thank God It didn’t happen in the middle of Covid. Um, and so I was.

16:04.94
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

16:11.85
Jennifer Newbill
Playing with all these different modalities was like I need a new studio and I really want to feel connection because feeling connection with others is a part of the journey and so a friend of mine said check this place out. They have an outdoor space and that’s kind of the the end of the story I’m a member of the community. That’s where I’m doing my yoga teacher training.

16:18.15
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, um.

16:29.77
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

16:31.71
Jennifer Newbill
I know the owner I know the manager you walk in and they’re like hey Jennifer Newbill you know it’s like the tv show. Cheers everybody knows your name like with hi hi like we’re on our Matt getting ready for class, especially if it’s a more of a flower viasa. Everybody’s building their energy like hey how’s it going. It’s been a while like oh you were traveling for work.

16:37.82
katrinamcollier
Yes.

16:50.76
katrinamcollier
Oh that’s lovely.

16:51.54
Jennifer Newbill
Tell me about that where did you go? It’s really really lovely and it’s you know when people say my studio or this place or this situation is my church. It feels. It’s There’s ritual, there’s community. There’s compassion for each other. There’s practice. Whatever that practice.

17:03.80
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, um, yeah.

17:11.29
Jennifer Newbill
Is um, mine happens to be yoga which is mind body and spirit and so finding that Studio has been an incredible part of my journey.

17:14.50
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

17:20.17
katrinamcollier
So with your this is something We’ve talked about in a previous episode with your trauma. Did you find it hard to be still because obviously with yoga you’re still and you’re really meditating aren’t you in all these poses I’m not the world’s best yoga so person so I will not.

17:28.37
Jennifer Newbill
Um, oh yeah, absolutely I Oh yeah I So when I started yoga.

17:38.39
katrinamcollier
Attempt to demonstrate anything you but I have done Kundalini I did like that and I need to get back to it but but but any of them I mean it really is about being still isn’t it which a lot of people are quite scared of hence they’re distracting themselves or they’re numbing or they’ve you know, got an addiction.

17:45.35
Jennifer Newbill
Kundalini’s a great practice. Yeah.

17:52.98
Jennifer Newbill
Um, exactly when I first started yoga. It was much more of a rigorous atun I did a lot of isangga kind of in the early 2000 and what’s great about aanga is it’s that’s physically challenging.

17:56.90
katrinamcollier
So.

18:02.61
katrinamcollier
Red.

18:08.71
katrinamcollier
Yeah, so.

18:10.38
Jennifer Newbill
But you have the same poses in the same order. So it’s also predictable which is really great for people that have anxiety and that have a hard time stay still course everybody is still at the end of yoga and Shavasana that’s and that’s sometimes the hardest pose for some people but.

18:13.38
katrinamcollier
Right? yes.

18:28.78
Jennifer Newbill
Through this journey I’ve practiced more yin more restorative and at first it was really hard for me. So like I have to hold this pose for 4 minutes are you kidding? 4 minutes is like a lifetime and it’s I’ve actually yeah and be still and silent. Yeah.

18:31.76
katrinamcollier
I.

18:37.54
katrinamcollier
Yeah, and be still and and silent as well Isn’t it. There’s no no.

18:48.56
Jennifer Newbill
And and sort of observing your thoughts and not being judgmental about I just had this thought why did I have that thought um, a lot of people I think when they’re I bet to be quiet. Well we can’t really turn our thoughts off That’s you know, really difficult but we can observe them in a way that says.

18:56.35
katrinamcollier
So I shouldn’t be having thoughts I meant to be even quiet or ah.

19:02.85
katrinamcollier
Ah, no yeah.

19:07.78
Jennifer Newbill
Oh that’s interesting I’m preparing for the party that’s on Sunday but I don’t need to do that right now so giving yourself permission to say that’s ah, that’s an exercise that I can do on Friday afternoon. Okay check, let’s come back to the breath right? So that’s a ah tremendous amount of.

19:23.17
katrinamcollier
Um, that helps doesn’t it the breathing coming back to the breathing. Yeah I find it I mean I I think I’ve written about this I’ve written so much stuff I’ve noted but about the learning to meditate I Always said I’d never be able to do that.

19:26.80
Jennifer Newbill
Like it of practice. But yep.

19:37.53
katrinamcollier
But then it’s when you initially start of course ego pops up doesn’t it and it’s going. You can’t take it and then just I’ve I’ve actually learnt just to say hey can you just leave me be ego. Can I just be here with soul meditating and enjoying the moment and can you just go away for like half an hour just please leave me be I’m safe be god.

19:38.65
Jennifer Newbill
Um, who.

19:47.28
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah, yes.

19:56.76
katrinamcollier
Yeah, it’s it’s It’s funny. How people don’t think that you can do that and you just you just learn to do that to just go I’ll think about the party later is that co yeah, that’s cool. Okay, yeah.

20:02.93
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah, yeah, there’s so there’s a lot of really good um practitioners and experts out there. Um, who can really provide a lot of tips and expertise on.

20:15.90
katrinamcollier
No.

20:18.14
Jennifer Newbill
Again, it’s not shutting your mind off. Um Sharon Salzberg is probably you know one of the best out there and she talks a lot about noticing and redirecting and I think she calls it beginning again and that kind of gives you a little bit of a break from.

20:31.37
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, like that Oh I like that? Yeah um.

20:37.69
Jennifer Newbill
Judgment. It’s like it’s the act of not turning your thoughts off. It’s the act of listening recognizing observing and then saying Okay, you don’t have to think about this right now. Let’s begin again and it’s all about beginning again and coming back to your breath and coming back to your breath and that’s the practice. So if you.

20:47.83
katrinamcollier
It remind me later. Yeah I love that? Yeah, that’s okay, yeah, and it’s okay.

20:56.40
Jennifer Newbill
Meditate not even for 30 minutes let’s say 5 and you begin again 15 times that’s the practice. Yeah, that’s the practice. Yep.

21:06.62
katrinamcollier
Since learning that So tell me more about the Sand bowls I mean I love them. But I want I Want to know how you got into that and just I’m just going to just I know my dog I think is going mental behind me if anyone’s doing random breathing. Ah.

21:09.19
Jennifer Newbill
Oh yeah, I Just I Love them. Ah I always look at my dog and I’m like what you breathing so hard about sometimes they just I don’t know what they’re doing. But. Um, thankfully mine is very very quiet right now. Yeah yes, yes, isn’t signing for sure.

21:30.45
katrinamcollier
Is it’s just falling on the floor really randomly like enjoying the energy of the conversation. That’s what it is is like oh this is fun is definitely an empire. Ah so but I want to know more about the bowls because obviously I have singing bowls but I haven’t. Actually I tell the very funest story in the book about this, you’ll appreciate this? Um, so I might have told you this before but I’ll tell you quickly. Um I was in a mall in ah northwest ah Houston and there was somebody who who looked like she’d just stepped out of woodstock playing a singing goal.

21:49.63
Jennifer Newbill
Um, her.

21:54.59
Jennifer Newbill
Um, oh okay, aha.

22:01.30
katrinamcollier
And I went into the shop because I’d seen something else that looked really interesting and as I went past I’m like looking like a scruff I’m like shorts and you know travel sandals and I’m I’m literally looking very normal and she she said a madam which immediately makes me go Oh God I’m not that old have you heard of a singing bowl and I went Yes yes I have too and the look on her face.

22:11.20
Jennifer Newbill
Aha.

22:21.21
katrinamcollier
She was so shocked because she judged me by what I was wearing I Just like oh that’s seriously funny at normal people have singing. But.

22:23.16
Jennifer Newbill
yes yeah yeah come on yes yes I have a full set of a full set of 7 goals. Yeah, so I think it’s I went to a place.

22:33.48
katrinamcollier
Yeah, oh I’m so jealous. Ah, all the notes. Yeah yeah.

22:41.74
Jennifer Newbill
Pre covid and then they had to close their doors and then they did virtual sessions and there’s this wonderful woman and Austin um, her name is trace ah Tracy Sage King I believe it is her name. Um, so I highly recommend her and I haven’t gone back to her studio because it’s opened back up again in a different location since covid but.

22:52.37
katrinamcollier
Yep, yeah.

23:01.50
Jennifer Newbill
She’s phenomenal with sound and sound healing and it’s more than just the bowls. It’s the singing bowls. It’s the ocean drum it’s and then she also has a huge drum Literally That’s this big right up to her chest and she would just in the sound healing session.

23:05.11
katrinamcollier
Oh yeah, vibration. Ah yes, but.

23:20.11
Jennifer Newbill
Um, just beat the strat and you go into a different place I don’t know where you go you go back in time you go forward in time you go into a different dimension sound is very powerful right? because our bodies are like an ah an instrument. We’re full of like seventy seventy five percent water

23:23.22
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

23:32.44
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, have eyebration.

23:39.85
Jennifer Newbill
This is why we’re so affected by the moon. So when the vibrations happen. There’s a lot of really powerful things that happen including the vibrations in your brain your vagus nerve right? All of these organs your heart. So I just found.

23:49.21
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

23:56.56
Jennifer Newbill
That modality really interesting I am by no means an expert I made level one certified sound healing practitioner like I don’t know how many levels there are but there’s so much to learn in this space. But I do it. It is you just.

24:03.38
katrinamcollier
Doesn’t matter.

24:07.66
katrinamcollier
But it’s quite intuitive isn’t it when you’re playing. It’s really you just follow the the sound and the the.

24:15.78
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah, and and and I I’m sure this weekend will take out my bowls. My dog will probably sit. He’s he’s cool with the bowls. He doesn’t have a problem with them. Some dogs are sensitive with the bowls and I’ll just play you know and it’s very relaxing.

24:21.79
katrinamcollier
Yeah, um, yeah I Would you don’t even want to know what’s going on behind me. He doesn’t like them. Ah.

24:33.38
Jennifer Newbill
But he’s just on the bed relaxing. But.

24:35.49
katrinamcollier
I do want to know what he’s doing it. So nobody he’s fairly quiet through these so I don’t lock him out but today he’s just you know, joining in ah ah he is I think it’s because he found a bone under there like a you know dog toy under the shakeskin. So today he’s.

24:40.91
Jennifer Newbill
He said he spoke muted Oh my gosh.

24:48.72
Jennifer Newbill
Oh yeah, he’s doing what he’s supposed to do. They’re supposed to sniff things out. Yeah oh my dogs. My dog’s almost eleven two his birthday’s right near christmas.

24:52.93
katrinamcollier
Just looking again which means he’s eating it. Yeah, he’s pretty inquisitive but he’s the lover. He’s normally calm. So.

25:08.27
katrinamcollier
Gorgeous age. Yeah, it’s it’s how fast the years go unfortunately. But I also feel it I find it really interesting with dogs with the sound going back to the sound how much they teach you.

25:08.47
Jennifer Newbill
I Can’t believe I can’t believe he’s a senior dog time Flies. It’s crazy. Um, they did.

25:24.92
katrinamcollier
About um and I noticed that with lance my first dog about like not just the the words we use but the sound the way we deliver the words and how you know that could have him cowing or really happy and I found that quite interesting. They’re very, they’re teach a lot. Don’t they they teach us a lot. So.

25:25.43
Jennifer Newbill
Um, then home.

25:32.84
Jennifer Newbill
Yep. Absolutely they do. There are little our little teachers. What’s the saying. There’s a word in the in hawaiian and I saw it on Instagram and it means it doesn’t mean you’re the owner you’re the guardian you’re the protector. You’re the companion and i.

25:44.80
katrinamcollier
Oh Oh yes. Yes I Saw that beautiful.

25:54.19
Jennifer Newbill
I love dogs so much we could have a whole 30 minute session about dogs. But.

25:57.13
katrinamcollier
We could totally do a podcast on dogs I’m a bit concerned. Mine’s about to have the share screen behind me pet Anyway, Ah, it’s just that he just doesn’t so it just ah know this is not good, but anyway, um so when you.

26:04.79
Jennifer Newbill
He’s so cute. He’s just having a good old time over there. But.

26:16.30
katrinamcollier
When you went into when you started. So did you have like what would you say to the listener like did you have trepidation before you started healing or was it like that email just miraculously landed in your inbox which I love or was it Nope This is for me I was drawn to I’m doing it go. But.

26:29.64
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yes I would say the former because I was already feeling anxious and worried and overthinking and I was in that head space.

26:40.19
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah.

26:43.66
Jennifer Newbill
But I was also feeling honestly Katrina a little desperate at that point I was like I feel like something like do I have a disease so I have an autoimmune disease like what’s going on with me and we can have a whole discussion about.

26:46.32
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

26:53.49
katrinamcollier
I Got to yeah, you were more.

26:59.94
Jennifer Newbill
Autoimmune diseases and what triggers them and what’s really happening. Um because I tend to think that this goes part and parcel with childhood trauma. You probably have the genetics things clash and then all of a sudden you’re feeling sick.

27:02.18
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

27:12.42
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, um.

27:15.20
Jennifer Newbill
Especially if you think about things like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. What are those illnesses. What do they really mean Um, and I think doctors are baffled by those things but a lot of those symptoms I had I was also we didn’t talk about this exhausted not just from sleeping but like I hurt. Like your joints hurt your muscles hurt. You’re like am I dying like you get really scared and desperate and so I was like you know what? I’m going to try this I think it was like a US dollar two hundred and fifty dollars Katrina I was like I’m going to try this. What can it hurt.

27:35.30
katrinamcollier
Oh wow, That’s so good. Yeah.

27:52.50
katrinamcollier
Don’t care. Yeah.

27:54.35
Jennifer Newbill
And I did not believe going down this path was necessarily going to work but I was like well let’s just see what happens and it it does so I would say for any listener that’s like this is speaking to me you could google dnrs or you could just Google rewiring.

28:00.80
katrinamcollier
And nothing else has worked. Yeah.

28:12.57
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

28:14.12
Jennifer Newbill
Therapy there’s several practitioners out there I follow some of these folks on Instagram and they’re saying the things that I’m saying and I’m like you’re speaking to me and it really works. You have to commit yourself though you have to commit yourself every single day to your healing of your brain and your body.

28:23.86
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, yes, yeah yeah.

28:32.79
Jennifer Newbill
But it works and there were people in this program because we would you could sign up for group sessions and they would be facilitated by someone who’s healed themselves and there were some guardrails in these sessions around. You can’t go down the path of I feel really bad or I had a bad day yesterday you have to keep it in.

28:36.45
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

28:46.58
katrinamcollier
Yeah, oh love life.

28:51.30
Jennifer Newbill
A certain mindset but also share what’s working for you. How are you feeling better really focused on that path. There were people that I met and this was all over Zoome that had been bedbound. They were that sick and they were like I went on a two mile walk today.

29:00.40
katrinamcollier
Wow.

29:09.35
Jennifer Newbill
Like it really is very amazing what we can do through this kind of um, Rewiring and how we can heal ourselves and a lot of the the individuals talked about. We didn’t go into a lot of the details of our trauma but boundaries with family members.

29:11.71
katrinamcollier
Yeah, yeah.

29:24.11
katrinamcollier
Oh my God boundaries So important.

29:27.72
Jennifer Newbill
Right? And so they’re like I’m healing myself but I still have to deal with these people that I have very unhealthy relationships with so we would talk about how do you build boundaries and and continue to be focused on yourself and and your journey so there it was It was a really.

29:38.93
katrinamcollier
Yeah, ah, ah.

29:44.94
Jennifer Newbill
Great experience I had I probably joined 4 or 5 different groups and each group would last for twelve weeks and we’d meet every single week and it it would I literally saw people transform where in the first session in the first week they’re in bed with their phone. They can’t get out of bed Katrina they’re that sick.

29:51.78
katrinamcollier
So beautiful. Yeah.

29:55.45
katrinamcollier
Yeah.

30:01.46
katrinamcollier
Hi.

30:04.82
Jennifer Newbill
And then by the Twelfth week. They’re like on their phone like walking they’re like I’m walking right now. So it’s really true I know it sounds a little wacky but there is research there is research. There’s proof and I hope I am proof and I’m still working on it every day.

30:10.38
katrinamcollier
Ah, it’s amazing Now it’s a row. No.

30:20.75
katrinamcollier
Ah, exactly your proof but it’s like um, you would find I have as far as I’m concerned healed but I have a scar so I can trigger but my complex ptsd and people would say that that some people would say you can’t and it’s like no you can I no longer feel.

30:22.66
Jennifer Newbill
Her.

30:30.39
Jennifer Newbill
Yep.

30:34.60
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

30:37.99
katrinamcollier
Way I’m not on high alert all the time I’m still very observant. But I’m not on high alert I’m not stressed I’m quite calm the vast majority of the time. Yes, of course there’ll be a few things because they’ll take me back to childhood that will trigger. But I’m aware and they happen so infrequently we’re like once a year kind of thing. So yes.

30:52.40
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, he.

30:57.31
katrinamcollier
So I know but it’s it’s like you said it’s an everyday thing and I think sometimes people just want a magic pill and it’s it takes time but actually I still think your journey was ma shorter my journey has been twelve years yeah I’ve been doing different bits and pieces for 12 years I mean look loads of it’s out in the spiritual scale and past life. It’s all coming out.

31:02.27
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah.

31:08.10
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah.

31:16.67
katrinamcollier
All coming up. You know, no everyone wants to go that far. But it’s that’s what I’ve done. Um, but it’s been. Yeah I mean even the initial was like probably four or so years but you know you’re undoing decades. So it’s okay I see I think yours is is amazingly oh amazingly.

31:17.82
Jennifer Newbill
Um, oh um.

31:25.34
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah decades. Yeah, yeah, Yay. Ah.

31:36.35
katrinamcollier
Ah, well I can see I mean from the person that I met six years ago and not having reconnected you with you in all that time which is shocking really how is 6 years gone funny 2020 s um like that just the most random decades so far isn’t it. Um, but I can see such a monumental shift in you. So.

31:43.54
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, why? But exactly.

31:54.53
katrinamcollier
I mean thank you for coming on and sharing your story if somebody wanted to reach out to you is what Linkedin the easiest if they’re just yep.

31:54.76
Jennifer Newbill
Um, was.

32:02.42
Jennifer Newbill
Linkedin’s good yeah or maybe Dm on Instagram I’m not on Facebook anymore the 2016 election I was like I’m done I delete my profile ah thing. Yeah I’m referring obviously to the.

32:06.58
katrinamcollier
Ah I’m done can’t do this anymore and I just thought you’d unfriended me and I’m kidding. Um, oh yeah, that was that was awful. Let’s not let’s not talk about that.

32:20.40
Jennifer Newbill
The Us presidential election but yet it it caused a lot of a lot of damage for a lot of people speaking of fight flight or freeze. Um, there’s a lot of people especially in the country that I live that are traumatized and then they get re-traumatized by either politics.

32:22.35
katrinamcollier
Gender.

32:28.50
katrinamcollier
Um, yes M in phrase.

32:40.90
Jennifer Newbill
Or Covid or so it’s time for us to all unpack these things and just heal I mean I would love a collective healing like that would just be a beautiful thing. But yeah, yeah.

32:40.31
katrinamcollier
Um, it it is time. Yeah wouldn’t it. They do exist. They do exist. We just need more people to join it and I do think people are shifting they are going towards that fifth dimension energy and. Away from the third but we have a fight in our hands but you know I’m really hoping that the podcast you know people will pass this on and they’ll keep going oh god just listen to this and we sort of start a bit of a movement and then the book I know the book is going to help so many people because I’m also explaining.

33:01.98
Jennifer Newbill
Yep.

33:10.18
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yes I can’t wait for the book and.

33:15.59
katrinamcollier
I’m explaining stuff like you’ve beautifully explained to your program I’m explaining my stuff and I’m trying to put a bit of science in there for the skeptics as well. When I start talking past lives I’m like use some science to back that up. Um, you know just to to demystify and and hopefully to empower healers as well to be more vocal because some of us are hiding.

33:20.93
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah, yeah.

33:33.42
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yeah.

33:35.60
katrinamcollier
And we’re not saying we have these guests we’ve done this you know I Love this come and join me you know and so we’re not necessarily even sharing just with our networks. So hope. So anyway we’ll say time will tell Oh yeah, please yeah.

33:42.98
Jennifer Newbill
Yeah I think you ah 1 point I wanted to make was you talked about the science and and and having the site there is a lot of science. Um, on this topic there is a lot of data. But also there’s there you need to have faith.

33:51.55
katrinamcollier
Um, yeah, yeah, yes.

33:58.64
Jennifer Newbill
And sometimes you’re not going to have the science or all the answers and you’re going to go down a path and you’re going to ask yourself I don’t know what I’m doing just try it and something incredible might happen so we don’t always have all the science because.

34:06.82
katrinamcollier
Yeah, might happen.

34:15.77
Jennifer Newbill
All these wonderful scientists on this planet which I have deep respect for they don’t all know either right? They don’t know So um, so also trust yourself on.

34:21.83
katrinamcollier
I Don’t they really don’t and I think also when you exactly and you’re saying the funny thing is you mentioned the vagus nerve. It runs up. You know it runs gut ah into your head and we’ve all been taught.

34:33.42
Jennifer Newbill
Exactly.

34:36.72
katrinamcollier
Logic and actually I think people that logic away disconnected from their emotions often from trauma. So it’s actually if your gut’s going I’m going to try this I’m just feeling drawn to it. Go with it like your your gut and your heart are saying This is a safe path for you. Trust it because especially soul and it’s so quiet isn’t it your heart So quiet.

34:42.65
Jennifer Newbill
Um.

34:46.13
Jennifer Newbill
Um, yes, and.

34:54.88
katrinamcollier
It’s not that loud voice up here. It’s this quiet 1 going, try this just I’ve got an email in your inbox to share this with you off you go you know so amazing. What a conversation. Thank you again so much. Oh you’re so welcome.

34:56.83
Jennifer Newbill
Um, exactly yeah, you’re welcome. Thank you for having me.
